This has been the first year for
all the yearlings to show as they were un shown as a foal’s. They have all been very easy to produce and
has taken all the fuss and pampering in their stride, they have all been very
good to wash, trim, plat, load, travel, and will happily stand on the lorry on
their own and in company they are equally happy in both a lorry or
trailer.
Generally we take them from the
field the day before a show, we will either bring them home in a lorry or
trailer and if weather and time is kind we lead them home, so they have the
experience of both travelling and road walking. When walking we generally go in single file but we will regularly
change the order and handlers around, this way they get used to been handled by
different people, walking in company and on their own, they walk in front,
behind and in the middle. On times we might only take one away so they will be
used to been on their own and leaving their field mates behind. On the walk home from the field they pass
other horses hanging over the hedge, a stallion playing race horses up &
down the hedge line, a pig, cyclists and dog’s and varying amount of
traffic from cars to lorry’s. Although
it’s only about a mile, it can be very busy.
Once home they undergo a quick
trim with clippers and scissors, 5 minutes under the hose pipe and a tail in a
bucket of water. They are then platted up and hoods and rugs on and put to bed.
(Platting is generally done in the morning but if it’s a very early start and
with 5 or so to do some will get done the night before). They are all very used
to being, mucked out, groomed, rugged, while been tied up or loose and
regularly have the farrier.
OUR EVENTFUL TRIP TO MALVERN
As well as Bart & Ozzy we
took 3 of the yearlings; Bugsy, Bella & Coco To the National in Hand show
at Malvern. Due to unforeseen
circumstances the trip to Malvern took longer than expected, We left home at
about 3pm, we started off with Bart, Ozzy, Bella & Bugsy on my lorry and
Coco on Marinas lorry. Unfortunately Marinas lorry had a fuel blockage and
decided to die of death just before Llandovery, To make room for our little
equine hitch hiker (Coco) we had to unload all the horses off my lorry in the
car park in Llandovery, then reload them further in to the lorry leaving an
empty stall near the ramp for our little hitch hiker. We then returned to the dead lorry, reverse up to its ramp and
Coco; the dear little yearling happily walked down one ramp and up the other
ramp.
All this was done while on an
extremely fast stretch of road with the traffic still racing past us. Times like this we all really appreciate the
easy sensible temperaments that our horses have, although we didn’t plan to be
un loading & loading in a busy car park or on a fast main road things
happen that you cant help! I was
totally happy to hold Bart and Ozzy together at the same time while 2 adults
and a child juggled the wheel barrow,
bales of hay, buckets and 2 yearling’s around,
all the horses did as we asked, went were they were told and loaded
perfectly as we expected. Excellent behaviour for 1 stallion, a 3 year old and
3 yearlings.
We
eventually arrived at Malvern at about 11pm, all the unloading and stabling
took place either in total darkness or very limited orange light. They were all impeccably behaved and settled
down in their temporary accommodation very well. We have found them all to be very good and easy to do in all
that we have done with them. |
